Poem - Digging the Hole

Rumination.

It is a narrowing of the self to space between two ears.

Thoughts and comparisons act as shovels of dirt,

Digging further into darkness.

You tell yourself you're not worth it, that you could never achieve the qualities you desire most…

Cold darkness makes no promises

It envelops and blinds you to everything.

Yet it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The more you dig, the deeper, and colder, you become.

Frozen in time, you look up.

The light pierces the skin, blisters the mind, and melts your core.

Staring up, you find salvation in the deepest, darkest moments of your life

You realize now, the only way out is to climb.

When does the digging stop?

At this moment you realize the shovel lies in your calloused hands, you are in control.

Put the shovel down.

We each have a gift.

We are capable of choice.

You look down and it’s familiar.

You have been there before.

You are accustomed to the dark.

But when you look up, there is hope.

The dark no longer whispers to you.

It tries, but you can see past the lies.

At the top the shovel loses focus, you’re out.

The tool used to dig is now forgotten.

What are you waiting for?

Climb.
