Block Buster, Truth & Big Tech, Orthodox Privilege | Feeding Frenzy #30

Feeding Frenzy is a weekly post that is a collection of knowledge to absorb in whatever medium you choose. Every week you can expect something worth listening, reading, watching, and pondering. Think of this as a boost of the signal above the noise!

In this edition, we have two podcasts worth your time. The first is Blockbuster, a biographical podcast inside the minds of blockbuster filmmakers. The second is with Tristan Harris shares insights on big tech and how they take more than they give. We have an article from Paul Graham, adding a new term called Orthodox Privilege and more!

Worth Listening

Blockbuster

Season 1 is the inside story of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. How did these young visionaries change film making? What's even more fascinating is the extreme amount of uncertainty in creating what we consider classic films today! Take a trip inside the minds of these blockbusters!

Can Truth Survive Big Tech? Tristan Harris | Rebel Wisdom

I've shared Tristan Harris before and still believe he's a profound thinker around modern technology and how they interface with society. Every time I hear him, I question the assumed normal with all these devices and apps. I think it's even more relevant to evaluate them during this pandemic since they have become a tether to the outside world.

Worth Reading

The "War in Your Head" | Jordan Peterson

"It's really hard to think. You have to be trained like mad to think. You have to be able to divide yourself internally into a couple of different people, and then you have to let those people have a war in your head. And that means you have to develop characters who have opinions in great detail—opinions that might be contrary to your own, and then you have to withstand the tension of letting them have it out."

Orthodox Privilege | Paul Graham

" Orthodox privilege: The more conventional-minded someone is, the more it seems to them that it's safe for everyone to express their opinions."

" But they can't overcome orthodox privilege just by learning more. They'd have to become more independent-minded. If that happens at all, it doesn't happen on the time scale of one conversation."

This article from Paul Graham spurred a lot of interesting dialogue with my friends. We found it be useful to understand viewpoints or ideas we haven't been exposed too.

Worth Watching

The Business of Drugs | Netflix

I've been finding this show interesting. I went into this with very little understanding of the scope of the drug trade. I know it's a large market, but it's hidden from my daily life, for which I am fortunate. The show does an excellent job of not making individual sellers into good or bad people. Thry people who are doing what they have to for survival to provide for their families. It's not as simple as the high-level actions make it seem.

Worth Pondering
