#17 - Feeding Frenzy

Feeding Frenzy is a weekly round-up of reading, listening, or watching that is worth your time. These posts will act as a weekly boost of signal above the noise that you can chew on over the week!

Worth Listening

Stephan Moccio on Authenticity, Risk, and Adjusting

"No one's going to give you what you want better than yourself, so you have to go get it."

Stephan Moccio is a producer, composer, recording artist, and musician behind some of music's most massive, inescapable global hits. Sometimes a conversation will hit you; differently, this was one of those conversations. For me, Stephan is one of those people who lives for depth and authenticity. Music for him is an expression of himself at a deep level, and it is through his craft he can learn more about himself.

Worth Reading

Be Humble, and Proudly, Psychologists Say | New York Times

'"These kinds of findings may account for the fact that people high in intellectual humility are not easily manipulated with regard to their views," Dr. Krumrei Mancuso said. The findings, she added, may also "help us understand how humility can be associated with holding convictions."'

In an earlier edition of Feeding Frenzy, I shared a blog by Shane Snow on Intellectual Humility. I believe this topic is a fascinating area of research to understand how people can better disconnect themselves from their ideas.

New Study: Sleep Is Literally a Deep Clean for Your Brain | Inc.com

"Maybe the most important take-home message is that sleep is a serious thing," he says. "You really need to sleep to keep a healthy brain because it links electrical activity to a practical housekeeping function."

Back again, with sleep! I could go out and collect sleep articles at this point, but that feels like beating a dead horse. So instead, I will gentle prod those who read with articles like this to slowly push our culture to reevaluate sleep.

Journalists Against Free Speech | City-Journal

"For the first time, rather than being ashamed of this assault on free speech, most people on campus seemed to rally around the protesters," says Lukianoff, coauthor of The Coddling of the American Mind. "That's when we started hearing the language of medicalization, that free speech would cause medical harm. Outsiders dismissed this as a college phenomenon and predicted that these intolerant fragile kids would have to change when they hit the real world. But instead, they're changing the world."

Journalism is in a strange spot and by extension, protecting the freedom of speech. While I can under specific categories of speech be censored, but we have to be careful how far the pendulum swings. In many cases, the extremes on both sides look very similar to each other in a sense; they end up becoming self-fulfilling prophecies by causing the harm they set out to avoid.

Worth Watching
